Microneedling is the art of penetrating the skin with very small needles creating controlled tissue damage that stimulates the body’s healing response. This results in increased collagen and elastin production, enhanced vascularity and, ultimately, skin rejuvenation.
The Chinese were the first to employ microneedling with the purpose of allowing Qi (vital energy) to enter through the channels opened by needling skin tissue. This procedure was documented in Chinese medical texts as early as 100 BC.
Whereas the Chinese used needles that eventually became rollers to induce micro-damage to the skin, today we have FDA approved needling instruments that offer precise control of the microneedling depth and a well-controlled aseptic technique.
At MLA, we use the SkinPen (FDA approved) to perform this service. It is a great alternative for those who seek a gradual facial, décolleté or hand rejuvenation program, or for those who are concerned about laser radiation or cost. It is indicated for treatment of wrinkles, pigment, melasma, photodamaged skin, acne scars or skin laxity. It is safe for use in all skin types, Fitzpatrick I-VI.
We also have the option of using the open channels to facilitate efficient absorption of various serums, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentrates or tranexamic acid for melasma.
